The social networking site doesn’t have to be scary, it can actually help you stay in touch!

Not everyone is completely comfortable with the idea of social media – some people feel it exposes too much about a person, or that it makes contact and interaction too impersonal.

That could be true, but that also depends on how you’re using social media in the first place. There’s certainly no denying that Facebook has been a great help in reconnecting people, and even if you’re not the most technologically savvy or understand the inner workings of the social networking site, there are several ways that you can harness the power networking through the World Wide Web.

We’ve put together a couple of tips on how to make Facebook work the best for you.

Always put a profile picture and fill in some details. Some people may prefer to be anonymous, and hide as much as they can when they’re online. But the fact is – how will people know it’s you, if there’s no way for them to confirm it? Think about it the other way around as well, if you’re searching out friends from school or ex-colleagues, it might be difficult to know which one to add if there’s no profile picture to have a look at, and very scant details to go on. Put in a fairly recent picture, and list at least a few companies you’ve worked at, or where you went to school. You can skip entering any contact details if you want to keep that offline.

Join interest groups or follow companies you like. Many companies and interest groups have all realised the reach that they can get through a Facebook page, so it’s worthwhile searching for the companies or products that you like.

Are you a fervent karaoke fan? Or love to find out tips about powerwalking? Facebook is actually the perfect place to get more tips and tricks. Take for example, the Karaoke group where members share ideas and inspirations, or ask questions to the rest of the group.

The same goes with companies that you like, add them to your Facebook newsfeed and you’ll be able to get updates or news, and sometimes even win discounts and prizes.

Don’t be a silent reader. Share the things you like too! One of the best things about Facebook is discovering lots of funny or inspiring articles that other people may have shared. It’s an interesting way to get an ‘alternate’ type of news, or sometimes even the best way to get the most up-to-date news on what’s happening around the world. On that token, be part of the sharing process too. If you find an article you know your friends would love to read, share it. You never know who may have gotten the same inspiration as you did.
